When You Come To The End Of Your Rope, Tie A Knot And Hang On It.

In his famous quote, Roosevelt meant:

When it feels life everything is going wrong, don’t give up. Instead, find that one great thing that you can specifically hold on.

This is the similar to Winston Churchill’s quote, “Success is not final. Failure is not fatal: it’s the courage to continue that counts.” In simple terms, never allow your previous successes to lure you into complacency, neither should you allow failure to stop you from pursing your dream. Instead, keep moving forward with the greatest determination (Be Persistent).

In this post, you will learn how to be persistent. If you haven’t checked my previous related posts, click the link below to read them.

  3. Why you should be persistent
  4. Why people lack persistence

I am going to help you start dreaming big again. But before the motivational stuff, do you understand The Law of Priming the Pump? I learnt this when I was reading Victor Antonio’s book “How to Achieve Network Marketing Success.” Here is what you will in the book:

When I was in Puerto Rico one year, I remember going to a remote place outside of San Juan. I pulled over to a small gas station to use the restroom. As I walked around toward the back, I noticed an old-fashioned water pump off to the side. There were no faucets to wash my hands in the restroom, so I went over to the pump and started to move the lever up and down to see if it was still functional. I pumped for a minute or so, but no water came out. And just as I was about to give up because I was getting tired, a man from the station said,

“Keep going. It takes time, but it will give you water.”

So I kept pumping. Sure enough, after a few more well-exerted pumps, I got a little bit of water. But as I kept pumping, the water started to gush out. Believe it or not, I felt a sense of excitement as more and more water started running out of the spigot. I also noticed that I didn’t have to pump quite as hard to keep the water flowing at full force. (If you want a copy of the book, kindly contact me here).

With that in mind, let’s focus on some of the things that persistent people have and do to keep the going long after many people have given up.

We all set goals at one point or another that basically translates to our dreams or vision. More often we start over by working tirelessly towards those goals. We set our expectation too high matching our efforts. We want things that come so fast forgetting that success is not an overnight even. In setting a goal, understand your needs and wants, make them clear, exact and precise, note them down and if possible, break them into simple sub-goals. Doing so will match your goals with your capabilities. Writing them down acts as a reminder and helps in increasing your focus.

Inspiration is what makes initiates your achievement. Inspiration can be in many forms, from family or friends, from yourself, from the environment among others. Recognize that you will always have people around you that will not support you or your goals. They will mock and criticize you in many ways. When your journey of success begins, there will be people gunning for you all through. There are people—I categorize them as life’s losers—who get their sense of accomplishment and achievement from trying to stop others. As far as I’m concerned, if they had any real ability they wouldn’t be fighting anyone, they’d be doing something constructive themselves. The key is to not let their words or actions dominate your thinking. Use them as a motivation to prove your critics wrong. Many success people have always associated them other successful people all over the world. They reason behind this, is that when you surround yourself with those who have made it in your area of interest, there is a great source of inspiration and motivation. Locate a support group in your area, talk with trusted family members, friends about your issues and seek out any possible solution or advice. By doing so, it help you understand that failure happens, you be able to understand the reasons behind their previous failures, hence you will learn from them and use their experience to spur your attempts. Inspiration is also obtained from reading as many books as you can. I read at least three chapters of a book each morning depending with the length and content. Having the great source of inspiration increases your options for success. Personally, I follow many entrepreneurs on social media and sometimes we converse through emails.

Having set your goals and have got your mind set to achieving that goal from the inspirations, you will need a plan to drive toward your goal, a strategy. A strategy is a plan of action designed to achieve a long term or overall aim. It’s the strategy you put in place in to bring your goal (dream house, car, business etc.) to a reality. Having been in the network marketing business, it’s my experience that in order to make more money, you have to bring in more downlines. For you to achieve that, you will need to prospect which leads you to the following questions, where and how? Knowing where to get the prospects and how to get them is the key to success. Knowing where to prospect helps you understand the characteristics of those who are going to meet and thus you will know how to approach them this is the same elsewhere. When formulating an action plan, take into account existing barriers and resources you have learnt from inspiration. Having a strategy helps you achieve the following advantages:

  • Taking advantage of resources and emerging opportunities
  • Responding effectively to resistance and barriers
  • Time management

With your strategy, inspiration and goals set, consider the time available, your efforts and available resources to give your goal a reasonable amount of time you want it achieved. The time you allocate to the goal is called a Time-Frame. In many cases, we tend to set open ended goals, which you might have done it previously, for instance, “One day, I will buy a Lamborghini”. Such goals are often not executed or will never be achieved. You may think it’s a will (goal) but it’s a wish. People enter into businesses with very high/ low expectation, overestimating/ underestimating their abilities and time. You can’t start a hotel today with over $50000 and expect to have a huge profit in less than a month. However inviting the place is, that will not be the case. It takes time to build a house. When setting up your time frame, always leave room to work on your strategic plan bit by bit.

No goal will be achieved without a corresponding action. As an entrepreneur, Donald Trump says in his book “The art of The Deal” that, you can have the most wonderful product in the world, but if people don’t know about it, it’s not going to be worth much. How will the market be aware of the apartments/ plots you want to sell or rent? You must do something. When politicians want to vie for a position in the government, they reach us through the media, campaigns, posters, fliers and even word of mouth communication. They get the word out. This’s not an exception to any other goals you have. You must take action to achieve them. How do know what you should do? You have heard that geniuses are born. But today, get it from me. Geniuses are born and they can be made too. The thing is, there is power in knowledge, read as many books as you can. If Barack Obama can afford to read an hour just before leaving presidency, who are you? Are you earning as much as him? Then you need to read more books than him. Get out of your comfort zone. Remember, however great your goal may seem, it’s only the efforts, time and actions you take that matters a lot.

There are many thing already aired on how you will be persistent but if you choose to follow the VISTA formula, you will always emerge successful.

Don’t quit.

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,

When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill,

When the funds are low and the debts are sigh,

And you want to smile but you have to sigh,

When care is pressing you down a bit,

Rest, if you just, but don’t you quit.

For life is queer with its twists and turns

As every one of us sometimes learns.

And many a failure turns about

When he might have won had he stuck it out

Don’t give up though the pace seems slow-

You may succeed with another blow.

Success id failure turned inside out-

The silver tint of the clouds of doubt.

And you never can tell how close you are.

It may be near when it seems so far:

So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit

It’s when things seem worst that you must not quit.

Thanks for reading… I hope you have learnt something that is going to help you maintain your focus on that goal you want to achieve.
